HMLC Elementary

HMLC’s Elementary Program is a one-day per week drop-off enrichment program for homeschoolers in 1st-4th grades. We create a holistic experience for our young learners by utilizing a “book study” model. Each trimester we read a chapter book together that guides our learning activities for the 12 week session. Each week we cover Language Arts, Math, and Spanish in addition to having deep discussions on the book’s themes. This program is held mainly in our outdoor classroom with the option to utilize indoor space on bad weather days. Foundational themes of nature connection, hands-on crafts, sensory exploration, social emotional learning, and free play are woven into our time together each week. HMLC is a place for friendships and individual confidence to grow and flourish!

Daily Schedule

HMLC Elementary is held on Wednesdays from 9:30am-3pm. You can choose to attend for the full day, or a half-day – morning (9:30-12:30pm) or afternoon (12-3pm).

Mixed-Age Learning

We believe children thrive in mixed-age group cohorts as opposed to rigid age brackets. By bringing together children of different ages, we create natural opportunities for older students to practice leadership and mentorship, while younger students find inspiration and encouragement from their older peers. This multi-age dynamic fosters deep empathy, cooperation, and a true sense of belonging. While much of our day will be spent learning and playing together as a whole group, we will split the group into younger and older sub-groups for certain Language Arts and Math lessons.

Subjects

Book Study

Each trimester we read a book together and discuss themes of the book and how they relate to our personal experiences of life as a group. Our first trimester of the 26/27 year we’ll read Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White and discuss themes of friendship, generosity, the cycle of life, farms, and the changing of the seasons.

Language Arts

Our younger learners focus on phonics, building reading proficiency, and handwriting. Our older learners focus on building reading stamina, as well as advanced phonics, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and handwriting.

Math

We explore math as it relates to the chapters we are reading and the real world. We focus on measurements, time, and money, as well as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions.

Spanish

We learn Spanish vocabulary related to the chapters we are reading. We practice proper pronunciation and learn to sound out words. We will practice basic greetings and learn songs.

Nature Study

Each day will be spent mostly outside. Your child will need to dress appropriately for the weather. We have plenty of time for outdoor exploration in our play yard as well as across the street at Richardson Park. We play games that foster nature connection. Each child will participate in a daily “sit spot” practice, where they return to the same spot each week to sit quietly alone and observe the natural world around them.
